The insight

1,000,000 tokens ≈ 750,000 words — enough to hold War and Peace.

What fits

  • This sentence, ~50××1500
  • A long blog post×375
  • The Great Gatsby×15
  • Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone×9
  • An average novel×8
  • The Lord of the Rings (trilogy)481,000 w
  • War and Peace587,000 w
  • The King James Bible783,000 w
  • Shakespeare, complete works885,000 w

How this works

A token is roughly ¾ of an English word, so a context window in tokens becomes a word count you can compare to books you know. “Fits” means the whole text would land inside the window at once — though in practice you leave room for the model's reply.

Word counts are approximate published figures. The point isn't precision; it's scale — a 1M-token window swallowing multiple novels is a very different thing from an 8K window that barely holds a blog post.
