AI Agents Need Better Surfaces, Not Just Better Reasoning

Agent quality is partly a model problem, but it is also a UI problem: the user needs to see what the system thinks it is doing.

The conversation around agents often concentrates on reasoning depth, reliability, and tool use. Those matter, but a quieter problem is becoming more obvious: the surface layer is still weak.

Users need interfaces that make plans, constraints, and status visible without turning every task into a debugging console.

That does not require maximal transparency. It requires legible progress.
